Course Goals
Students experience competition debate, which stresses organization, research, quick thinking, note taking, oral delivery and teamwork. Some first-year students will compete at invitational tournaments. Students may take the course more than once. Second and third time participants will compete in Varsity and Junior Varsity Invitationals.

Vocabulary of Debate, Reading strategies for evidence, Independent reading, Planning Opening Speech, Constructing an argument, Research synthesis, Thesis & support, Vocabulary development, Critical thinking, Time limits, Writing process – selecting research support, Political issues in the national resolution, Economic principles/federal deficit concerns, Planning Negative strategy, Research, Independent reading, Analysis & synthesis of research, Thesis & support for negative arguments, Critical thinking, Writing process and organization, Time management
